When it happens, it really happens ...

I've been wonderfully busy over the last week - which is the best feeling in the world. I have had clients each day for 7 consecutive days. Yep - I even work at the weekends!

So here's a quick review of what I did:

• Individual Business Portraits x 3

• Business portraits - 23 people in 2 poses 
• Event Photography
• Family Portrait

Written down in a list like that it doesn't seem so great - but believe me it was fantastic. Also as well as that list of shooting I have also been to 5 networking groups, delivered a ten minute presentation on how to get the best out of your phone when capturing holiday snaps and had two 121 meetings to find out more about other people's businesses.

Well when you group them together like that it seems that I am mostly a portrait photographer. I have meet some amazing people and had such fun and laughs with them. I have been told there are some lovely testimonials coming my way as well. 

 

Another great achievement this week was that I got to make use of my new lighting kit which I bought at the Photography Show back in March. I like them and will be make much more use of them in the future. Firstly thought I need to sort out a proper bag for them so that the lights and the stands they need can be easily transported/carried/moved about. This week was a little tough in that respect. But I have done a little research on Amazon and think I may have found a solution that saves my back and shoulders.

 

I have learned an awful lot from this week. And I am gloriously happy.

Rankin on Life

"It's about the pictures."

Just watching the programme which was on recently, presented by Rankin - America in Pictures: The story of Life magazine where he is interviewing former Life photographers. Extraordinary, and very interesting.

Two things:

One - is he going to talk about the future of photojournalism and the fact that photojournalists are being made redundant because of the ubiquitous iPhone and the rise of the citizen journalists? Read this article.

Two - is this programme just a way of advertising his new magazine? The new D&AD competition is a brief he has set. It is an interesting brief and one I am looking forward to creating something for it - but one has to consider whether it is a master stroke to raise the profile of the mag. Good luck to him he clearly has a savvy marketing and PR team.

Oh he didn't mention the future of photojournalism. But it was a film filled with truly great photographers who are braver (and some my say) more talented than Rankin.

Fashion/Portrait Photography

Really enjoyed my shoot today with Rheanne. Captured some lovely shots which will be great for my portfolio. I set off this morning with a couple of images in my mind that I had seen this week whilst researching fashion images on an app I had downloaded for my iPad.

Call for models

My call for models has resulted in a charming young lady saying she is interested.

I shall be in touch with her and her mum just as soon as my make-up artist friend returns from Ireland (and I'm back from Paris). I am sure we shall have a fun time capturing some fabulous fashion and portrait shots. Rehanne wishes to move into modelling so this will be a lovely start for her portfolio. I am really looking forward to this and to working collaboratively with Sheelagh Powell MUA.

Portraits - call for models

The more I look at the images I captured on Tuesday the more impressed I am with them. At a portfolio review in July it was suggested that I should continue with my portrait work as it was very good. Well I think I can see what he was saying now. We always doubt ourselves and our abilities.

Plan is then to create a book of portraits and take it along to some agents and see what they have to say. I will be capturing more images like this. I will need models - I will choose some myself but if you or your family are interested - send me an email.

I have had very encouraging feedback to my portrait work and feel that my portfolio could do with some new images. Also I have been asked if I do fashion photography. Today I decided to combine the two and see where it leads. Taking inspiration from Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton and Albert Eisenstaedt and their iconic Vogue cover shots.

I purchased the fan, the mask, the gloves, the red lipstick and the black eyeliner. I think I am beginning to appreciate the hard work of the make-up artists and hair stylists. I know an excellent make-up artist and my next fashion shoot will involve her.

Laura and I are going to book the studio and work on some other images together. I am finding this quite exciting.
